aarhus 2004-01-19 -- 10:59 p.m. um sorry that this is awfully written. no sleep no sleep. saturday: it is very cool here and also very strange for me. the washroom is a shower and it's weird. i don't know how to use it yet, so when i turned on the tap, i ended up giving myself a little shower. too bad i was wearing my clothes. getting here was quite the challenge. we had a v bumpy flight so i couldn't sleep. we were in london for 24 hours, so we went sightseeing and didn't sleep at all. we were going to sleep in the airport, but by that time we felt too tired to do that. we met some people in the airport, one english girl, one irish boy and one aussie girl. it was fun! they were our airport friends. then we took the worst flight in history to aarhus, it was so bad. my ears hurt so much i thought i would go deaf for sure. we got here around 11am and it's kinda weird. the dorms are always dark and you have to go around the halls turning on the lights where you want to walk and they turn off in five minutes. it's to save power b.c it's so expensive here. but scary. my roommate, christoffer, said that i shouldn't be scared and that the city is v safe. christoffer helped me set up the internet and my bed (they got me a bed instead of the awful couch you're supposed to be sleeping on) and showed steph and me a map and where to go visit. christoffer is very nice. my room isn't bad, it just needs some stuff in it. i have to say that i am SO GLAD i sent that box to myself because i have hardly anything here. it was so heavy to carry what i had around and steph ended up paying $100 for her bag in excess baggage anyway... i'm so glad i sent myself stuff. i haven't gotten it yet, so i hope it gets here on monday. someone let me use a sleeping bag and i'm using a sweater as a pillow, which is fine for now. nothing is open on sunday, so i am screwed for food tomorrow, i hope someone takes pity on me! all i bought with the cash on me was a loaf of bread and two cans of soup (on for steph, one for me), so we already had one and we will have one tomorrow. it's not very good soup. now i can't sleep but it's 5.11am, so i should try at least. people around the dorm are still awake,i guess because it's sat night or something. today: we went grocery shopping for the first time and the woman was mad at us because they don't take visa and we didn't know, because, really, who doesn't take visa? she was like, "NEJ! NEJ!" so stephanie had to wait while i went to the bank to change my money. i stupidly forgot to pack a towel in my pack and had to borrow a hand towel from stephanie. also, the sugar is weird so the tea tastes different. i will be glad to get the box because it has my beloved tetley's tea in it. they have it here, but NO ORANGE PEKOE! tomorrow some guy from the danish school of journalism is taking us to ikea (!) because i'm going to buy a rug, a shelf, a lamp, and a plant or two. the room is kind of like a jail cell, which is fitting, because i received a letter addressed to the students: "dear inmates". it will be much better if i can get a poster of some sort. all in all, the danes are brilliant. brilliant as in "cool", not smart. not that they aren't smart. but they're all so nice and polite, but not overbearing. you know, they're kind of like canadians. one thing that they all are is GORGEOUS. they are just like a robot race of supermodels. okay, not all of them. just most of them. interesting sidebar: all unis in denmark have bars in them and hold what is known as a "friday bar" at 3 pm, which i find quite endearing not to mention excessively smokey. |
