copenhagen 2004-02-17 -- 9:32 p.m.
don't do in a group of 6 went to copenhagen and stayed in a dorm room meant for 4 with 5 other people. it was quite uncomfortable. it's a lesson on travelling, really. it's very difficult in such a large group if you only have a few days in a city. there were lots of 7-11s. copenhagen was beautiful. we saw the ballet for about $10 (they have very good student rates). we ate traditional danish open-faced sandwiches. the shopping is amazing. it's definitely a city you'd want to shop in if you had the cash. which i don't, really. so that part was bittersweet. i'll have to go back. alone.
i visited christiania and i have to say, it was a little bit disappointing. i'd imagined a hippie heaven full with super-advanced society, but it was more like a dying kensington market in toronto. you could buy drugs on the street and shirts with a marijuana leaf emblazened across the front, but really, is that so special?
i do recommend the moon bean cafe, though. that's a rough translation. you'll find it. it's great there. warning: they don't want you to take photos (though i did, i mean, the journalist in me did).
so i interviewed him. alfonso. poor alfonso. i felt so bad for him, though he stole like a hundred million dollars. his face was haggardly, drooping, almost falling off his bones with sadness. his shoulders slumped when i told him who i was, me, bursting with youth, smiling at this man who'd already ruined his life a million times over. me, with years and years ahead of me, ready to send him up the river for a line in the newspaper and a dollar a word. not that he doesn't deserve it, stealing millions of dollars, money that could have built 4500 houses for poor people. him, making almost $200,000 a year to go around shaking hands with dignitaries and getting free dinners just to keep his mouth shut. i bet his apartment is so much nicer than mine. isn't that what it comes down to? i might not live in toronto anymore. after i graduate. i might move. or work at nelvana. i don't know yet. |
